The legal industry has experienced a resurgence of entrepreneurial ventures and growth investment in the past few years. There are many reasons for this development, including the large size of the legal market, the fragmented nature of legal technology and services providers, the boom in venture capital and private equity investment across the U.S. and world economies, and the active acquisition environment in the legal industry.

This article aims to outline for actual or prospective entrepreneurs in the legal industry a roadmap of activities and considerations to help turn their entrepreneurial dreams into realities. I write with the deep and longstanding belief based on 20 years of work in this area that entrepreneurship—and the innovation it can bring—is good for the people in the legal industry, and for the countries where the legal industry operates.
