Perhaps few other privacy laws can attest to having as outsized an impact as Illinois’ Biometric Information Privacy Act (BIPA). And a settlement in ACLU v Clearview AI in the Circuit Court of Cook County, Illinois, earlier this month might further solidify the reach of BIPA.

Still, some wonder if the provisions in the settlementsuch as a ban on facial recognition provider Clearview AI selling its existing database of facial vectors to any private entities across the U.S.will only be seen as a blip in the wider battle for consumer data privacy. But others believe the impact of this settlement will be felt throughout tech companies all over the country.
