Artificial intelligence-powered contract review company LexCheck announced Wednesday that it raised $17 million in a series A funding round backed by venture capital firm Mayfield Fund. The investment will be used to expand the company's contract review capabilities, its sales and marketing team and its research and development efforts, according to a press release.

As other tech companies are slashing staff and downsizing in a precarious economy, a historically bootstrapped company closing a large funding round might come as a surprise to some.

But to Gary Sangha, the CEO of LexCheck, a contract review platform, it makes sense.
