As generative AI tools such as ChatGPT capture the imagination, and fears, of many in the economy, those at law firms are grappling with if and how it should be applied in their own operations. But here, at least for now, there may be a generational divide.

According to the “ChatGPT and Generative AI within Law Firms” report by Thomson Reuters Institute, which surveyed 443 mid-sized and large law firms in the U.S., U.K and Canada during March 2023, those in leadership roles at firms are more concerned over the risks of such technology than other law firm staff. However, the situation may change as lawyers and associates become more knowledgeable of ChatGPT and other generative AI technology.
