After months of questions around what data generative artificial intelligence tools like OpenAI's ChatGPT were trained on, a wave of lawsuits against OpenAI, Meta and Microsoft started to emerge, alleging that their tools were developed with copyrighted material. While the outcome of the lawsuits is uncertain, they already offer some lessons for legal technology professionals about the risks that different approaches to large language models (LLMs) bring, and steps organizations can take to protect themselves from liability.
