Legal tech startup Wordsmith announced that it raised $5 million in a seed funding round led by venture capital firm Index Ventures and including participation from General Catalyst, among others, on Thursday.

In the legal tech space, Index Ventures has previously led a funding round for generative AI-powered contract drafting, knowledge and collaboration platform Draftwise, while General Catalyst previously backed now-defunct hybrid law firm and software company Atrium.

Scotland-based Wordsmith was founded in 2023 by a former Instagram engineer and the former chief technology officer and former VP of travel technology platform TravelPerk. The startup offers a generative AI-powered legal assistant, targeted to in-house legal teams, that can automate legal response drafting and contract analysis and markup, among other functions.
