Last month's release of the new R1 generative artificial intelligence model from Chinese company DeepSeek caused commotion across industries, as technologists raced to assess the new model’s performance and investors considered the implications of the prospect of low-cost gen AI offerings.
After the initial furor died down, a number of questions remained about the model, including what data it was trained on and whether its reported development costs were authentic.
