For years Thomas Gottschalk, the former general counsel of General Motors Corporation, was a notorious computerphobe. Fellow GM lawyers recall that Gottschalk used his computer as a plant stand, and read his e-mails only after a secretary printed them out. He scribbled replies on the printouts and sent them back.

So imagine the surprise of in-house lawyer Michael Gruskin when Gottschalk in the late nineties put him in charge of a team to improve information technology for the legal group. And Gruskin was even more shocked when Gottschalk later backed an innovative plan that has given GM one of the most tech-savvy legal departments in the country. It was this state-of-the-art technology that helped earn the company a spot as a Best Legal Department finalist.
