Rapidly rising energy costs and increased awareness of the possibility of global warming have made conservation efforts a matter of both financial and social concern for law firms. Many firms are seeking to reduce energy consumption and the resulting carbon emissions, while promoting their successes to clients who have similar goals.
The American Bar Association has encouraged these efforts by joining with the Environmental Protection Agency in developing the Law Office Climate Challenge, which is a two-year pilot program that began in March 2007. To participate in the initiative, individual offices may implement one of three programs: the WasteWise (or best practices), the Green Power Partnership and Energy Star. Firms then report how much they’ve reduced their greenhouse gas emissions and the ABA publishes that data. The EPA and the ABA also will recognize participating law firms as Climate Challenge Partners or, depending on the level of commitment, Climate Challenge Leaders.
