I recently opened my e-mail to see the delightful headline that Sharon Hwang had been voted president-elect of the Asian American Bar Association of the greater Chicago area. A partner at the intellectual property firm McAndrews, Held & Malloy, we worked together on a business development project and she’s acted as a reference on my behalf. I sent her a congratulatory e-mail immediately. This is part of my regular practice of using technology to stay in touch with people and maintain relationships with them.
The news came via a Google alert, one of the many electronic tipoff services that lawyers can use to begin or deepen relationships with clients. New business comes through relationships, so maintaining them via alert services is an important business development activity. Think of these social networking tools as the energy drinks of business development. E-alerts are the guarana, taurine and caffeine of business development.
