The playing field for establishing a brand and generating business has come a long way from standing uncomfortably at a local networking event nursing a soda (or, who are we kidding, wine) wearing a tragic “My Name Is” sticker. Today, we are always plugged in, with 24-hour access to every expert in every field. Our networking is now taking place before we ever meet in person. Love it or hate it, the world of social networking is here to stay and is evolving in ways we can only imagine.
This change has also altered the power of our first impressions. For as much as your personal image is an opportunity to be a walking business card, if you participate in social networking (e.g., Facebook, LinkedIn, Twitter, etc.) your online profile is essentially your electronic business card. Because we are visual by nature, the seven seconds we have to make a first impression no longer just applies to our person-to-person encounters but also online.
