James Hammond, president of RainMaker Software Inc., sent a St. Patrick’s Day challenge to the legal community. His March 17, 2009 "Open Letter to the Legal Industry" pledged to provide $1 million in discounts to "help law firms invest in technology to better run their businesses."

But there’s a catch: To qualify, firms must agree to "pay forward an equivalent benefit in their local community."
