The days of paper press kits are numbered. That’s wonderful news for public relations professionals who assemble them. It’s even nicer for tradeshow and conference attendees who no longer have to lug them around and sort through them. Today, vendor information is digital, searchable and easily manageable. And that’s obviously good for the environment.
Exhibitors for years have brought boxes of information kits to tradeshows and put them in the press room so members of the media could pick up information and learn more about the exhibiting companies. “I don’t know how many tons of press kits vendors handed out, but it overwhelmed the media who attended,” says Dan Harmon, editor of The Lawyer’s PC newsletter. “In the early years of technology shows, when none of the information was electronic, we might collect 30 or 40 pounds of paper packets from 100 or more vendors. We would sort through at night, box the items that seemed important to ship home, and leave the discarded folders and materials piled up beside the trashcan in the hotel room. Ultimately, we retained no more than five percent of it.”
