The members of Topeka’s Westboro Baptist Church thank God for the death of every soldier who perishes in the Iraq war. Lance Cpl. Matthew Snyder, a 20-year-old U.S. Marine, joined the statistics on March 3, 2006. On March 8, his body arrived home in Westminster, Md.
The next day, seven Kansas church members boarded a flight to Baltimore. In a letter to police requesting protection, they said they intended to protest the funeral. Their message: The death of soldiers in Iraq is God’s vengeance against America for tolerating homosexuality.
