Of the 403 first responders who died in the September 11, 2001, attack on New York City, most did not have wills. Out of that tragedy came an inspiration — Wills for Heroes. It started with a simple idea: to provide free wills, living wills and powers of attorney to first responders (and their spouse/domestic partner), via a simple, stress-free process. Do the paperwork at their workplace, in one sitting. The question: how? The answer: technology.
Our pilot program, launched in 2001 in South Carolina, has evolved into a 501(c)(3) organization, the Wills for Heroes Foundation (www.willsforheroes.org). We work with fire, police, and other first response organizations. Their only responsibility is to provide meeting space, distribute questionnaires to interested participants, and coordinate appointments.
