We approach the challenge on many fronts. Our general counsel, Ronald Van Buskirk, advises us on risk management issues. We also have a 32-member professional responsibilities committee made up of lawyers and staff from all of our offices and all of our practice areas.
We participate in a self-insured malpractice consortium that was created in 1981 in the San Francisco Bay Area. Among the other charter members were Morrison & Foerster; Orrick, Herrington & Sutcliffe; Cooley Godward; and McCutchen, Doyle, Brown & Enersen. The consortium provides insurance, creates requirements to meet insurance standards and audits its 20-plus members.
