While results may depend on the type of process done, and the level of sophistication of your EDD vendor, the quality of EDD data if not done properly can be comparable to the quality of raw optical character recognition (OCR). And even the best EDD processing can be improved with manual editing, tomaximize useable results from a database search.
EDD processing is better than OCR processing, in that it will provide field header information on e-mails, authors on files, etc. But it does not give you everything a coded database might. In a typical discovery search, you may find that your database is full of general document types, such as “e-mail” and “miscellaneous,” requiring a tedious process to find the data you want.
