This is not the level of sophistication that one might expect 20 years into the PC revolution.

Here are some of the surprising findings:

  • An amazing 45 percent of respondents still do not have Internet access at their office, and an astounding 85 percent do not have Internet access on the road.
  • 77 percent cannot get to information on their office computer when they travel.
  • Only about half of firms have an e-mail use policy and/or Internet use policy. And 65 percent have no e-mail retention policy.
  • 63 percent are still using CD-ROM for legal research on the road — and almost all use it in the office.
  • Only 0.15 percent of respondents use a handheld computer to check e-mail.
  • LTN-Security on the road is still limited to virus protection software (27 percent) while passwords and encryption ran around 15 percent. Fourteen percent admit to taking no LTN-Security precautions at all.
