Driving to Carmel last month, I saw a Bose outlet store at Gilroy, Calif., and screeched to the exit. Not that I thought I’d get one dime off at the outlet store — but at least I would get instant gratification. Otherwise, the only place you can buy them is directly from Bose (Framington, Mass.) via www.bose.com or 1-800-www-bose.

Let’s put it this way: If you fly only once a year, these puppies are worth every single red cent of their $299 price tag. Not only do they dramatically reduce jet noise (and even better, wails from screaming babies!), but they are the first pair of headsets I’ve ever used that give you decent volume out of your CD player — especially on rowdy classical CDs, such as the Verdi Requiem, where there’s huge ranges between the pianissimo and double forte sections. They also plug right into the airplane’s movies and audio channels, and include adapters. Go ahead! You’re worth it!
