The best of the bunch is an ersatz video recorder called a TiVo, from TiVo Inc., of Alviso, Calif. This gadget marries a computer hard drive to your TV set. With a TiVo, you can record any program and play it back with digital quality. Better yet, you can choose to record every episode of your favorite program and play them back at your leisure.

Indeed, you can pull down movies starring your favorite actor, episodes of Northern Exposure that only play from 2 a.m. to 3 a.m. on channel 557 and watch them whenever you like. Heck, TiVo will even keep track of your viewing habits and record stuff it thinks you might like to see.
