Everybody makes mistakes. But in today’s economy, small and midsize law firms cannot afford costly errors or oversights. Here are five top blunders:

1. Reinventing the wheel. In most firms, documents that contain "boilerplate" text are often recycled, to provide the foundation for another file. Legal professions go through the "base" document paragraph by paragraph to make changes. That approach can easily generate mistakes when key changes are omitted, and/or original metadata is left in the document. This is a prescription for embarrassment at best, a malpractice claim at worst.
