As law firms look to continue maintenance for RIM BlackBerrys and extend it to Apple iPhones, mobile device support for time and billing apps is becoming a more critical factor in defining mobility for lawyers. Three software manufacturers can help your firm go mobile with time and billing operations: iDTE for iPhone and DTE InHand for BlackBerry, from the maker of DTE Axiom; AirTime Manager Inc., which has released its namesake product for both BlackBerry and iPhone; and Carpe Diem Mobile (formerly TimeKM), now a division of Tikit.

Each product has features that particularly stand out for large law firms, with different pricing structures and varying levels of customer technical support. As the chart shows, all of the apps capture time in some manner, with all tracking time spent by task. If you already use DTE Axiom, you’ll probably want to stick with the two DTE products, but note that iDTE does not capture time by telephone calls or via e-mail, while the other three apps do. If you already use Carpe Diem, the mobile version will probably work best for your firm. Although Carpe Diem Mobile doesn’t yet capture time by timer, the company says it plans to add the feature by the second quarter of 2011.
