Microsoft this week acquired Prodiance, a privately owned software company with an e-discovery application, but isn’t yet explaining its agenda for the technology.

Prodiance, in Pleasanton, Calif., is better known in compliance and risk management circles than it is in e-discovery. It focuses on spreadsheet compliance software and assessment services for end-user computers, both tightly integrated with Microsoft’s SharePoint data collaboration server.

“Spreadsheets and data are key to many organizations’ operations, yet they are oftentimes created in uncontrolled environments. Today we took another step in helping customers mitigate this risk and improve data compliance and control,” Microsoft Office Senior Product Manager Albert Chew wrote on Office Blogs on Tuesday. “The acquisition of Prodiance enables deeper integration of compliance-related [software] into future versions of Office and SharePoint,” he stated.
