Silver Peak Systems, a manufacturer of wide area network optimization and acceleration products, has teamed with Avaya, a provider of business communication and collaboration products and services, to put Silver Peak’s VX family of virtual WAN optimization software in the Avaya Secure Router 4134. The combination aims to optimize the performance of voice and video and other data across dedicated WAN links and ensure remote branch offices have reliable access to centralized applications and data– all without adding additional hardware appliances dedicated to accelerating network traffic.

The Avaya SR 4134 is a multiservice routing and switching platform that supports a stateful firewall, virtual private networks, and a voice over IP gateway, as well as a virtual WAN optimization appliance from Silver Peak. The 4134 has a high-performance blade server module that can host virtual appliances and third-party applications like the Silver Peak VX-series appliances. According to Larry Cormier of Silver Peak, the increasing use of hypervisors and their performance on Intel platforms has enabled Silver Peak to virtualize WAN optimization and embed their technology into appliances like the SR 4134.
