Righthaven is self-styled as “The Nation’s Pre-Eminent Copyright Enforcer” and is in the lucrative business of suing bloggers and website owners for copyright infringement of works originally created by a handful of domestic newspapers it calls clients. In connection with those suits, the firm has exacted hundreds of thousands of dollars in nuisance value settlements. But recent decisions finding that the firm lacked standing to purse infringement claims have put an abrupt end to that steady flow of settlement dollars. Regardless of the minor setback, Righthaven will adapt, and ensure it has standing going forward.
