But responses by the 82 technology chiefs who participated in the 16th annual Am Law Tech survey — and follow-up interviews with 10 CIOs — reveal that BigLaw’s focus has shifted from dollars to data. Specifically, how do the nation’s top firms make information accessible to lawyers — the longtime goal of knowledge management — without making it too accessible?

Many of the most promising technologies, such as mobile devices and cloud computing, create an environment where anywhere-anytime access to data is the rule. But at the same time, these technologies raise serious concerns about security and client confidentiality. Firms need to walk a fine line, leveraging the efficiencies of the new technology while keeping control over sensitive data.
