A dominant theme permeated the Colorado Association of Litigation Support Professionals’ 2011 E-Discovery Summit : To succeed, litigants must embrace e-discovery teams and jettison traditional vertical hierarchies where a senior partner or general counsel channels General George Patton. The time has come, they said, for true collaboration, where everyone has a voice — whether or not they have a bar ticket, said several panelists.

“We need to change the culture of law firms,” said William Hamilton, a partner at Quarles & Brady. Firms must create e-discovery groups where “the best idea wins,” he told the Denver audience of about 160 paralegals, attorneys, and litigation support professionals. “Hierarchy culture disenfranchises everybody in the operation, and doesn’t create a collaborative, collegiate environment.”
