I’m not an electrician, air conditioning technician, or fire suppression system designer, but over my 15 years as an IT director I’ve done internships in all these vocations. Chillers, tonnage, pumps, amps, and agents are as much a part of my and my staff’s vocabulary as SQL, gigabytes, and 128-bit encryption.

In 2009 our firm, Pierce Atwood, decided to relocate our Portland, Maine, headquarters. During the planning process, I began to consider moving our servers to a hosted data center, to get out of the business of managing building systems. Several other good reasons began to unfold.
