Stephanie Kimbro, based in Wilmington, N.C., practices estate planning law via a “virtual” solo law office. Her inspiration came while an associate at Shanklin & Nichols, where she encountered individuals who needed legal services but could not afford billable-hour fees and did not qualify for legal aid. Without technology, the firm could not make a profit on these matters. “I identified a market need that was not being met,” she recalls.
With husband Benjamin Norman, she founded Virtual Law Office Technology, and in 2006, opened her web-based solo practice. Among her goals: to have more flexible working hours as her family grew.
