Exemplify targets attorneys working on complex, high stakes transactions and agreements, explains president George May. The software creates a blackline (aka redline) comparison of documents to show changes, insertions, deletions, etc. It digests millions of text documents from the U.S. Security & Exchange Commission’s EDGAR [electronic data gathering, analysis, and retrieval] database into templates of standardized, computer-readable parts. Exemplify also helps professionals compare legal and financial documents against existing documents that are considered “market standards,” says May, who previously was a vice president at both Kroll Ontrack and Thomson.”This helps reveal errors, omissions, non-standard terminology, and deal-specific terms in those documents,” May explains.
The Exemplify team takes keen advantage of mobile technology, allowing May to remain based in Minnesota’s Twin Cities. Plus, his house is “only about 20 minutes to the airport, that’s all that matters.” Other staff and investors live in Southern California, Chicago, and New Mexico. “You wouldn’t believe how quickly we can move when we want to make something happen.”
