BlackBerry maker Research In Motion began shipping device management software on Tuesday that works with its products as well as Apple iOS and Google Android systems — but whether that can help preserve the Canadian mobile pioneer’s once lofty position among enterprise customers is unclear.

The software is called Mobile Fusion and is based on RIM’s ubiquitous BlackBerry Enterprise Server, commonly known as BES. RIM, based in Waterloo, Ontario, announced the software in May 2011 and originally said it would ship later that year.
