Empire Lawyers Service, parent of New York City-based American Clerical Service acquired the assets of Aetna Judicial Service on June 5. Empire itself is owned by holding company Skinder-Strauss, best known for its print and online directories, including the Lawyers Diary and Manual and LDMonline, as well as the eLaw court docketing website.

While terms of the acquisition were not disclosed, Aetna and American bring together a total of 110 employees, and a larger number of independent contractors that serve as process servers. A press release announcing the acquisition suggests that the two companies, which for now will continue to operate under their own names, will be the largest “court clerical and process serving attorney support firm” in New York City, with several thousand law firm clients.
