The Microsoft Windows 8 operating system will be generally available this fall, executives of the software giant confirmed Monday.

“New Windows 8 PCs will be available to buy and upgrades will also be available starting in late October,” said Microsoft’s Tami Reller, who serves as chief financial officer and chief marketing officer for Windows. Some organizations, however, will have early access: “For enterprise customers, you will have complete access to Windows 8 bits as early as August,” Reller added, referring to clients of Microsoft’s Software Assurance licensing plan. (Watch video, beginning at the 2:30 mark, of Reller’s speech at the Microsoft Worldwide Partner Conference in Toronto.)
