Atlanta, Ga.-based e-discovery provider OrcaTec, maker of the OrcaTec Document Decisioning Suite, has been awarded a new patent for a process used in its OrcaSearch tool. This U.S. Patent No. 8,266,121, “Identifying Related Objects Using Quantum Clustering,” describes a method to organize nearly identical documents (near-duplicates) in disparate clusters of documents so that they can be reviewed together. OrcaTec’s new process also highlights the differences between these near duplicates, much like a full-read blackline, which lets you focus on the variances in the documents rather than having to proofread each one separately.

The technology behind the Quantum Clustering patent lets you use the OrcaSearch tool to separate out near duplicates from large silos of files into distinct clusters. Then you can either discard them if they aren’t relevant or examine them in more detail.
