E-discovery company SHMsoft Inc. is forming a nonprofit organization, the FreeEdd Foundation, to maintain and expand open-source legal technology software.

“Open source” refers to software that anyone can modify and that is often given away for free. It’s common for the software to reside under a nonprofit organization that is tasked with updating, licensing, and distributing the actual program code. Some open-source licenses require that any changes to the code must be shared, but the FreeEdd Foundation’s license does not, SHMsoft CEO Mark Kerzner explained. It’s based on the Apache Software Foundation license, which is widely used in many corporations.
