AppFolio Inc., a provider of web-based business management software, entered the legal market on Tuesday with its acquisition of MyCase Inc., the practice management software as a service with secure communication tools to keep clients informed of their cases.

AppFolio, headquartered in Santa Barbara, Calif., is headed up by former executives from Expertcity/CitrixOnline: Brian Donahoo, president and COO at AppFolio; and Klaus Schauser, chief strategist and co-founder of the company. At AppFolio, Donahoo and Schauser have focused on workflow software for different vertical industries, said Matthew Spiegel, now vice president and general manager at MyCase. AppFolio’s portfolio of software as a service includes a web-based property management application; RentApp, which supplies free online rental applications that includes options to collect application fees and screen applicants; and AppFolio SecureDocs, which features secure virtual data or deal rooms.
