Greetings from New York City, where first and foremost, to our colleagues on the East Coast, we send our fierce hope your loved ones are safe and your property damage is minimal. It has been a humbling and scary week, full of unthinkable tragedies — but as the cliché goes, intense crises often bring out the best in people, and we’re definitely seeing that phenomenon. On a personal note, I want to thank everyone who sent me texts and emails — especially my gang in New Orleans — it meant the world to me. Thank you.

If anything, based on what we’re hearing from all of you, our legal community’s experience with Sandy offers proof positive that working remotely works — IF you have electricity. This week has delivered many lessons to law firms, law departments, vendors, government agencies, etc., about how secure connectivity can do just about anything except keep the trains running. (See “Unleashed,” our June cover story in the magazine.) I know I’m not the only one who now will think twice about ever leaving my laptop at the office overnight.
