THE CONCEPT STARTED as a weak attempt at humor with my staff (I was the new CIO), but ended up as an effective team building exercise. After the honeymoon was over at three months, I commented to one of my staff about my new job: “It sounded like a good idea at the time.” I can’t remember the context, but that became number one on the list of things to say during my exit interview.
Those of you who run a law firm IT department know what I’m talking about. When you’re new to a law firm, you have to establish yourself as a leader and a visionary, and you have to develop relationships at the firm level, the department level, and the individual level. Even when you come with a solid set of credentials, you are under a microscope. There are countless expectations, especially within your own department, and you need to build trust and confidence. You look for various ways to meet those demands.
