How did you get into the business? Early in my career, I worked for a court reporting firm, Bean & Associates, in Albuquerque, N.M., as a proofreader. The owner, Jennifer Bean, went to the National Court Reporters Association convention. One of the vendors was InVzn , a now-defunct trial presentation software vendor. She came home from the convention and asked me if I would be interested in learning to do "trial stuff." I said I would be willing to learn more about it, so she sent me to Phoenix, Ariz., for training. By the time I got back after two weeks in Phoenix, she had two trials already lined up. InVzn eventually went out of business and many of their employees transitioned over to inData Corp., so I switched to using its product, Trial Director.
Tell us your favorite trial tech story: I had a trial in a small town in west Texas in a rural courthouse. We had to set up monitors and an audio system. There was not much electricity, so after using every available plug and running extension cords and taping them down I thought I was out of options. I needed two more outlets. I found two in the judge’s bathroom where he had a razor plugged in that he used for a quick touch-up at lunch. I asked the judge whose name I have long forgotten if I could use his plugs for equipment and he agreed. Problem solved.
