What are the e-discovery "Big Six Blunders" — and the e-discovery skills and accessible software needed to banish them into oblivion? This was the topic of the opening panel of first University of Florida Levin College of Law/ EDRM two-day event, "E-Discovery for the Small and Medium Case." The conference, held April 4-5, was targeted to everyday litigation — the small and medium case. The idea was initially generated by new Florida state court e-discovery rules and the revised American Bar Association ethics codes addressing technological competence of lawyers. It was offered in person at the UFLCL advocacy center, in Gainesville, Fla., as well as simulcast online. St. Paul, Minnesota-based consultant George Socha, co-founder of the Electronic Data Reference Model, co-chaired the event.

Capitalizing on the internet and the serendipity that the Florida conference overlapped with ABA Techshow (April 4-6 in Chicago), the opening keynote was presented by consultant Tom O’Connor, director of the Gulf Coast Legal Tech Center, of New Orleans; Browning Marean, partner at DLA Piper based in San Diego; and Oshkosh, Wisc. consultant Bruce Olsen, president of Onlaw Trial Technologies. Their presentation was streamed in live from DLA Piper’s offices in Chicago, adjacent to the Chicago Hilton where ABA Techshow was in progress. (O’Connor and Olsen are the authors of Electronic Discovery for Small Cases: Managing Digital Evidence and ESI, published by the ABA’s Law Practice Management section.)
