Few landings in the world are as beautiful as the approach to Sea-Tac airport, especially on a crisp, clear rain-free July day with magnificent Mt. Rainier in full view, and the blue waters that cover 41 percent of Seattle sparkling. What gorgeous geography for the American Association of Law Libraries annual conference, July 13 to 16.

As we discussed last week, the conference, held at the Seattle Sheraton and the Washington Convention Center, was terrific, and opened up my eyes to some legal technology niches, such as court and government libraries. The event reminded me of why sometimes there is no substitute for “being there.” Virtual meetings have definite benefits, but it’s often the face-to-face networking that generates ideas and action plans. I especially enjoyed the spontaneous gatherings at the Sheraton’s Fountain Wine Bar and Lounge; the scheduled networking activities like the Thomson Reuters & AALL Member Appreciation Event at the Experience Music Project Museum; the intimate Bloomberg Law party; and the energizing and delicious meals at the Steelhead Diner and Wild Ginger.
