For the e-discovery true believers — actually, for just about any lawyer — nothing will put “butts in seats” faster at any conference than the chance to listen to judges talk. It’s a trademark tactic at the annual Georgetown Advanced E-Discovery Institute, and it’s no surprise that organizer Patrick Oot uses the same strategy at the third annual Electronic Discovery Institute Leadership Summit. (Oot, general counsel of EDI, has strong ties to the Georgetown program.)

It works. Despite the federal government’s shut down, which squashed the travel plans of some of the regulars, three hardy jurists found their way to Santa Monica’s beachfront to serve on the opening panel, “Order in the Summit! The Judges’ Forum:” Michael Baylson, U.S.D.C. senior judge, (Eastern District, Pa.); Gisela Cardonne Ely, circuit judge, 11th Judicial Circuit of Florida; and Elizabeth Laporte, chief magistrate judge, (Northern District, Calif.). Steve Zipperstein, general counsel and chief legal officer, BlackBerry, served as moderator (and did a marvelous and funny job plugging his beleaguered company throughout the presentations).
