When I was working my way through night law school at the University of San Francisco a zillion years ago, I never would have guessed that my temp experiences would “inform” my entire legal career. No one is more invisible in Big Law than temp secretaries, and it was a fascinating experiment. Like “Undercover Boss”—when you are the very lowest of the low, you see the good, the bad and the ugly.

Once I had a year of legal training under my belt, I began to get better jobs—and worked my way into paralegal, trial assistance and other support roles. I had amazing mentors, many kind lawyers and judges who encouraged me forward to the bar.
