Most lawyers probably thought we would never see the day that the American Bar Association would do anything but resist organizations such as Rocket Lawyer Inc. But as of Friday, the two are officially frenemies. At the ABA’s annual meeting in Boston, they jointly announced that they are teaming up to address “a vexing legal paradox—the difficulty small businesses face finding affordable legal services at a time when many lawyers would welcome expanded professional opportunities.”

Via a pilot program, the Chicago-based ABA and San Francisco-headquartered Rocket Lawyer, which offers online legal services, “will collaborate to test new ways to empower lawyers to deliver affordable online legal services to small businesses and the self-employed.” The pilot will “connect the ABA’s network of practicing lawyers to prospective clients through Rocket Lawyer’s cloud-based platform.”
