With a flood of recent news stories regarding numerous high-profile data breaches, it is incumbent upon counsel to arm themselves with a deeper understanding of the complex legal and regulatory cybersecurity landscape and the associated growing privacy and data security risks.
We continue to hear about information security breaches in record numbers, and businesses across industries—including law firms—are realizing their data is increasingly vulnerable to cyberattacks. Symantec Corporation’s 2014 Internet Security Threat Report found that over 552 million unique identities were exposed because of breaches that occurred in 2013. The report also found there were 253 data breach incidents that year, an increase of 62 percent over the 156 reported in 2012.
