Whether you call them case, matter or practice management systems, they are the mainstay for legal services and maintaining lawyer-client relationships. And when you look closely at these systems, there is always something new. Practice management software as a service changes rapidly. Last year Appfolio Inc.’s MyCase released an Android app and followed that with a new “foldering” feature to organize documents, which adds to the company’s tagging feature. Rocket Matter unveiled its native iPad app and a plugin to connect the company’s namesake practice management system to Microsoft Corp.’s Outlook desktop.
SaaS-based practice management features continue to draw closer to feature-rich, on-premise software, and many providers, such as Themis Solutions Inc.’s Clio, add value by integrating with other cloud service providers. Clio’s calendar for Elite subscribers accesses court rules from CalendarRules.com and subscribers use Lawdingo’s client intake process. But a cloud-based system may never match on-premise software unless it provides an entire platform as a service, which is what Abacus Data Systems Inc. offers customers in its turn-key Abacus Private Cloud.
