As more organizations zero in on risk management and regulatory compliance, the topic of information governance (IG) commands greater attention—but the concept of IG is far from new. However, the challenges of so-called info gov has evolved in recent years as informational forces—including Big Data, data security, regulatory compliance and e-discovery—converge to induce a much more significant meaning as a company-wide initiative with multiple objectives.

According to research company Gartner Inc.’s definition, information governance “is the specification of decision rights and an accountability framework to encourage desirable behavior in the valuation, creation, storage, use, archival and deletion of information. It includes the processes, roles, standards and metrics that ensure the effective and efficient use of information in enabling an organization to achieve its goals.”
