A letter signed by some 38 legal academics who concerned over surveillance policy in the United Kingdom has been sent to each member of Parliament there, with the goal of adding transparency to current methods and curtailing further expansion of surveillance programs. The signatories of the letter want to see any proposed powers, under revisions to UK surveillance laws, fully vetted in a transparent process.

“As we welcome a new Government we expect another round of revisions to UK surveillance laws, with the likelihood that the Queen’s Speech will signal a revival of the Communications Data Bill,” the letter said in part. “… Any changes in the law, and especially any expansions of power, [need to be] … fully and transparently vetted by Parliament, and open to consultation from the public and all relevant stakeholders.”
