Hosting an international webinar a few days ago, I was asked a very direct, if technical, question by one of the delegates: “Which DM solutions are ‘true’ cloud solutions using the cloud’s resiliency and flexible storage models allowing them to scale? It seems many of the DM solutions only put their traditional software on regular server infrastructure with a web front end on the Internet. That’s not really a cloud app!” My response was direct and non-technical: “Actually, who cares?”

This wasn’t meant to be rude, or flippant, it was simply a realistic response to a recent discussion about ‘False Clouds’ and one vendor’s attempt to perhaps confuse end-users. When it comes to enterprise-grade document management systems (DMS), especially ones appropriate for professional services, does true, false, new, legacy, hosted, really matter to the end users? In my opinion, to the firms that actually buy those systems, it doesn’t—or, if they think it does, it shouldn’t.
