Developments in the European Union’s privacy policies have made it much more difficult for U.S.-based companies to determine whether or not they comply with standards governing the secure transfer of private information. One way around that issue? Keep data in the region it’s collected from. And that’s just what Microsoft plans to do, with its plan to offer Azure, Office 365 and Dynamics CRM Online directly from German data centers for German users.

Announced on Nov. 11, the German versions of Microsoft’s business software will store data associated only with data centers in Magdeburg and Frankfurt am Main. The service will be overseen by T-Systems, a subsidiary of Deutsche Telekom, which will ensure that all information stored in and transferred from the centers meet data handling regulations currently in play within the region. Microsoft will also implement a number of security features, including encryption, German SSL/TLS protocol certification and physical security to prevent data from falling into the wrong hands.
